Doctoral Researcher (m,f,x): Exploring phase stability in multinary intermetallic nanoparticles and thin films by comparative sputtering in ionic liquids and on solid substrates, for 3 years, 39,83 hours per week, TVL E13

The Chair of Materials Discovery and Interfaces at the Institute for Materials is one of the leading facilities for high-throughput materials research and develops new multifunctional materials by using combinatorial coating processes (material libraries) and high-throughput characterization methods. Unique experimental facilities are available for this purpose (combinatorial sputtering systems, high-throughput characterization methods, etc.).

In this cooperation project with the Max-Planck-Institut for Sustainable Materials (MPI-SusMat, Düsseldorf) we are looking for a doctoral researcher (m/f/x) for our part of the DFG project “Exploring phase stability in multinary intermetallic nanoparticles and thin films by comparative sputtering in ionic liquids and on solid substrates, and analysis by advanced transmission electron microscopy and electrochemical measurements”. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with very good knowledge in the fields of materials science and thin film technology, who is willing to tackle new, exciting and promising topics in an interdisciplinary environment and has the ambition to efficiently generate and publish new scientific findings.

Your tasks:

- Synthesis of multinary intermetallic nanoparticles by sputtering in ionic liquids
- Synthesis of multinary intermetallic thin films by sputtering on solid substrates
- Inert handling of ionic liquids in glove-box system and in Schlenk line
- High-throughput characterization (composition, structure, electrochemical properties) and in-depth characterization of the synthesized materials
- Active and close collaboration with the project partner at MPI-SusMat
- Analysis and visualization of results
- Active usage of research data management system
- Publication of results

Your profile:

- Completed studies with very good results, with a focus on materials science, e.g., from mechanical engineering (specializing in materials), materials science, materials chemistry or comparable
- Practical experience in the synthesis of thin films or nanoparticles, preferable sputtering
- Practical experience in the characterization of thin films or nanomaterials, e.g. EDX, XRD, …
- Experience in the field electrochemistry is desirable
- Interest in publications
- The future doctoral researcher (m/f/d) is expected to: work independently with high motivation, be able to collaborate in teams in a goal-oriented manner, efficiently translate results into scientific publications, have very good scientific, technical and communication skills, be fluent in written and spoken English

Postdoc (m,f,x) in electrolyte design for lithium batteries for 2 years with 39,83 hours per week, TV-L E13

The Chair of "Atomic-Scale Characterization" is studying materials at the atomic level.

The chair of Atomic-scale Characterisation is looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher (m,f,x) in chemistry/materials science with a strong background in designing electrolytes for lithium metal batteries. He or she is expected to design new electrolytes to be compatible with lithium metal electrolytes, fabricate electrode or coin cells, perform electrochemical measurements (battery cycling, voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) of battery cells, and other physicochemical characterization (e.g., scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy) for lithium metal batteries.

The postdoctoral researcher will be funded by the European Research Council (ERC) consolidator grant ‘INTERACT’ for two years.

Your tasks:

- The Postdoctoral researcher (m,f,x) will work closely with other members in the Chair of Atomic-scale Characterization to improve a fundamental understanding of how electrode/electrolyte interfaces work in batteries, expanding his or her knowledge in materials characterization.
- The position will be equipped with a PhD student.
- The successful candidate will work in the new research center for interface-dominated high-performance materials (ZGH) at Ruhr University Bochum, which houses a large and comprehensive suite of equipment dedicated to nanostructure analysis; the center is among the world's best facilities of its kind.

Your profile:

- The candidate must have:
- a PhD degree in materials science, organic or inorganic chemistry, electrochemistry
- extensive experience in designing new electrolytes for lithium metal anodes, performing electrochemical battery cycling tests, characterizing electrode/electrolyte interfaces or interphases by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy
- solid knowledge of electrochemistry or relevant project experiences
- a high level of spoken and written English
- can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team
- can work in a multicultural environment

- experiences in investigating solid electrolyte interphases by operando spectroscopy

Doctoral Researcher (m,f,x) for 3,75 years with 39,83 hours per week, TV-L E13  

The Center for Interface-Dominated High Performance Materials (Zentrum für Grenzflächendominierte Höchstleistungswerkstoffe, ZGH) at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum develops new materials through comprehensive understanding and design of material interfaces, exploiting new combinations of structural and functional properties. ZGH is equipped with a set of high-end research equipment for the investigation of surfaces and interfaces of materials, such as atom probe tomography (APT) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM).  

For the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1625 (Atomic-scale understanding and design of multifunctional compositionally complex solid solution surfaces, https://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/crc1625/index.html.en), we are looking for a doctoral researcher (m,f,x) for the project B01 (Accelerated atomic-scale exploration of phase evolution in CCSS systems using combinatorial processing platforms). The aim of this project is to investigate the surface composition and the phase stability of compositionally complex solid solution (CCSS) systems by APT and TEM, and to contribute to achieve the goal of the CRC: mastering surface atom arrangements.

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist (m,f,x) with a strong background in materials science or in a related field with a focus on thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations and/or materials characterization. Strong motivation to work independently, effective teamwork, efficient translation of results into scientific publications, and very good communication skills are expected of the future doctoral researcher (m,f,x).

Your tasks:  

- Collaborating with other groups within the CRC to synthesize and characterize CCSS thin films on APT tips.
- Conducting surface and volume chemical characterization using APT.
- Performing phase identification through high-resolution TEM.
- Participation in regular internal CRC meetings and presentation of results.
- Publication of research findings.

Your profile:  

- M.Sc./Diploma degree with very good grades in the field of materials science or materials physics or a closely related field.
- Experience with APT and TEM is appreciated.
- Experience in correlative microscopy, near-atomic scale chemical and structural characterization is appreciated.
- Fluent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Interest in publications.
