The German Diabetes Center (DDZ), Leibniz Institute for Diabetes Research at the Heinrich Heine University (HHU) Düsseldorf is an interdisciplinary research institute that links basic and clinical sciences to improve prevention, diagnosis and therapy of Diabetes mellitus and its complications. The Junior Research Group Crosstalk (head: Dr. Melanie Mittenbühler) at the Institute for Clinical Biochemistry and Pathobiochemistry focuses on how inter-tissue communication impacts energy balance and metabolic health. We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Doctoral Student (PhD/Dr. rer. nat., m/f/div., E13 TV-L 65%) to join our new research group. Our group is interested in secreted proteins from adipose and skeletal muscle tissue and how they affect whole-body metabolism and diseases. Specifically, we explore how exercise changes the muscle secretome and identify novel exercise-sensitive proteins that mediate the beneficial effects of physical activity. Moreover, we are studying how obesity-related alterations in the adipose tissue secretome lead to adipose tissue maladaptation. Utilizing cutting-edge techniques including proteomics, pharmacological interventions, genetic manipulations, and biochemical assays, we are investigating the molecular signaling pathways of these secreted proteins and their impact on obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and associated co-morbidities. You must have (or be close to obtaining) a master’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular Medicine or a related field. You are proficient in standard lab techniques (Western Blot, qPCR, Cell Culture) and molecular biology principles. Experience in working with mouse models is preferred. You have good organizational and interpersonal skills and are keen to work in a team. You communicate clearly and effectively in English, both in writing and verbally. We provide an exciting, dynamic and international working environment, unique resources for diabetes research and a structured and coherent mentoring and training program. You will be able to learn stateof-the-art methodologies in a newly formed team of young scientists. Initially, the position is to be awarded for 2 years starting from 01.05.2025 or later. An extension of the contract period is envisaged. The employment contract is governed by TV-L in its current version for North Rhine-Westphalia, including the special regulations regarding the scientific area. The salary is based on qualification and experience, according to TV-L.
