Bioinformatiker/in

Ph.D. student (f/m/d) - Translational Immunology (Bioinformatiker/in)

Berlin

The mission of the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) is medical
translation: transferring biomedical research findings into novel approaches to
personalized prediction, prevention, diagnostics and therapies and, conversely,
using clinical observations to develop new research ideas. The aim is to
deliver relevant medical benefits to patients and the population at large. The
BIH was founded in 2013 and is funded 90 percent by the Federal Ministry of
Education and Research (BMBF) and 10 percent by the State of Berlin. Since 2021
the BIH has been integrated into Charité as its so-called third pillar.

Starting from 01.05.2024 for three years the BIH is looking for a

Ph.D. student (f/m/d) - Translational Immunology

The Sawitzki lab at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité –
Universitätsmedizin Berlin investigates the molecular mechanisms of immune cell
activation and regulation, in order to better understand why components of the
immune response themselves become a trigger of destructive inflammatory
reactions, like e.g. in the context of autoimmune or COVID19 diseases. We are
using especially multi-parametric technologies (cytometry, imaging, scRNAseq)
to uncover pathological changes in the composition and function of immune cells
in patient cohorts or clinical trials.

Job description:

The candidate will be involved in a project that aims to understand i) why
certain patients develop severe immunopathologies in case of e.g. COVID-19
breakthrough infections and ii) whether or how the immune response differs from
the immune response at initial infection. This includes:

- Preparation of patient samples from blood or tissue for Deep Single-Cell
Profiling Studies
- Bioinformatic Analyses and evaluation of high multiparametric flow
cytometry and scRNAseq data sets
- Design and implementation of supporting mechanistic in vitro experiments

The candidate will be supervised by an experienced scientist, receive
technical support and have the chance to interact with national collaboration
partners which are investigating how swarm learning methods can support the
analysis of decentrally collected multi-parametric data sets.

Your profile:

- M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biology,
Immunology, Cell/Molecular Biology, Medical Biology, or a related field
- Strong academic background and dedication to translational research
especially in immune-mediated diseases
- Interest and/or expertise in working with cell biological systems
- Prior experience with at least one of the following methods is highly
desirable: multi-parameter (flow) cytometry, single cell RNAseq, computational
biology or data analysis of multiplex datasets
- Scientific curiosity, self-driven, and motivation to perform scientifically
rigorous experimental work
- Appreciation for interdisciplinary work and proactive drive to collaborate
across disciplines
- Project and data management skills
- Experience in scientific writing, fluent in english (written and spoken)

We offer:

- A varied job in a forward-looking research institute
- Flat hierarchies and short decision-making processes
- Very good opportunities for further education and training
- Remuneration up to TVöD VKA-K E13/65%
- Additional benefits customary in the public sector (e.g. annual bonus, VBL)
- 30 vacation days per year (with a five-day week) and up to 24 floating days
per year
- Flexible working hours for a better work-life balance
- Very accessible and attractive workplace at BIH @ Charité Campus Mitte
Rahel Hirsch Center (Luisenstraße 65, 10117 Berlin)

We live diversity!

BIH strongly encourages qualified women to apply. Applications from people
with a migration background who meet the hiring requirements are expressly
encouraged. Applicants with severe disabilities and those of equal status will
be given preferential consideration in the event of equal suitability.

Please submit your application via the BIH career portal
https://jobs.bihealth.org by 03.04.2024, quoting the reference number BIH-21.24.

Note:If you have a foreign university degree, please note that it may be
