Postdoctoral Scientist for Artificial Intelligence in Oncology (Biowissenschaftler/in)

The Junior Research Group "Genome Instability in Tumors" headed by Dr. Aurélie Ernst is offering a Postdoc Position in Cancer Biology (ERC funded).

We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist (experimental) to work on chromosome instability in space and time and understand the early stages of cancer development, using data from single-cell multiome and spatial profiling in the brain and the colon. The project is funded through the ERC "Unstable Genome".

The Ernst group aims at elucidating how chromosome instability leads to massive genome rearrangements and deciphering implications for cancer patients.

Your Tasks

As part of the research team, you will participate in the overall project and shape your own research profile in the following areas:

- Chromosome instability
- Early cancer development and clonal evolution
- Single-cell multiome analysis at ultra-large scale
- Spatial transcriptomics analysis
- Interactions between tumor cells and the microenvironment
- Dissecting the complex microenvironment of tumors by Multiplexed Ion Beam Imaging
- Mouse models of chromosome instability
- Human pre-cancer landscape, with a strong focus on the brain and the colon
- Clonal evolution and phylogeny analysis
- Analysis of copy-number changes and complex rearrangements as well as their impact on the transcriptome at single-cell resolution
- Clone fitness and selection

Your Profile

You have a PhD in biological sciences or a related field.
Experience with laboratory animal work (preferably mouse) and FELASA certification or similar is an advantage. If not already completed, you will be required to take the course for laboratory animal science. A cancer biology background and a basic understanding of computational biology will be valued.
A very good command of English is expected.

The position is available immediately. The initial term of employment is 3 years and may be extended up to a total of 5 years.

The lab of Prof. Dr. Moritz Gerstung is seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist for Artificial Intelligence in Oncology.

To support the work on spatial genomics analyses of brain tumours, the Division of Artificial Intelligence in Oncology is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to join the team as soon as possible. These ongoing large-scale studies investigate the molecular mechanisms governing the microanatomical organisation across the spectrum of brain tumours [1].
The work is based on spatial transcriptomics, proteomics and genomics methods which provide a detailed molecular read out for millions of cells found in tumour tissues [2]. The lab develops and uses a range of data science and AI methods to distill biological knowledge from these large spatially resolved data sets and to extract biomarkers of disease progression [3,4]. This work is also closely related to efforts in digital pathology which provides the means to translate spatial genomics findings to a routine clinical setting [5,6].

Your Tasks

In this role, the candidate will engage in all relevant steps of the aforementioned research projects. This includes experimental design, development of statistical and AI methods, computational analyses of large data sets, manuscript writing and reproducible documentation. You will work in close collaboration with AI specialists, computational biologists, clinicians and experimentalists. Due to the sizeable complexity within these projects, the candidate is encouraged to help shape these projects, explore their own areas of interest, and contribute new ideas and approaches to our research efforts.

Your Profile

- Master's and PhD degree in life or physical sciences with focus on bioinformatics
- Strong academic track record evidenced by peer-revied publications, preprints or other research outputs such as code repositories
- Deep understanding of data science methodologies
- Coding proficiency in Python, including PyTorch and other machine learning libraries
- Knowledge of cancer biology
- Affinity for collaborative work across discipline boundaries, international experience is an asset
- Proficiency in spoken and written English

Für die Planung und Umsetzung administrativer Prozesse in unseren zentralen Technologieplattformen (Core Facilities) sucht die Abteilung Enabling Technology zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt eine:n engagierte:n Projektkoordinator:in (m/w/d).

Die Core Facilities des DKFZ bieten den Forscher:innen am DKFZ Zugang zu einem breiten Spektrum modernster Technologien der Lebenswissenschaften und der entsprechenden methodischen Expertise. Als wissenschaftliche Serviceeinheiten arbeiten die Core Facilities an der Schnittstelle zwischen Forschung, Technologieentwicklung und Innovation. Als Projektkoordinator:in für administrative Prozesse in den Core Facilities berichten Sie an die Abteilungsleitung. Sie koordinieren Projekte in den Bereichen Investitionsplanung, Leistungserfassung und -verrechnung, nachhaltige Finanzierung und mehr. Sie arbeiten abteilungsübergreifend in enger Abstimmung mit den Leitungen der Core Facilities und der zentralen Administration. Ihr Ziel ist es, die Effizienz und Qualität der administrativen Abläufe zu steigern, um die Forschungsprojekte der Wissenschaftler:innen des DKFZ bestmöglich zu unterstützen.

Ihre Aufgaben:

- Sie gestalten aktiv die Konzeptionierung und Implementierung von Kostenstrukturen für die Abrechnung der Core Facility Services.
- Sie leiten eigenverantwortlich die fachübergreifende Projektgruppe zur internen Leistungsverrechnung und tragen maßgeblich zum Erfolg des Projekts bei.
- Gemeinsam mit der Finanzabteilung, dem Grants Office und den Leitungen der Core Facilities erarbeiten Sie Finanzierungskonzepte zur Sicherstellung der Nachhaltigkeit der Core Facilities und haben die Möglichkeit, dabei Ihre kreativen Ideen einzubringen.
- Sie unterstützen die Leitungen der Core Facilities sowie die Abteilungsleitung bei der vorausschauenden Investitionsplanung und der Finanzverwaltung der Core Facilities.
- Sie koordinieren die Weiterentwicklung einer Online-Buchungsplattform für die Planung und Nachverfolgung von Dienstleistungen und begleiten ihre erweiterte Implementierung.
- Sie beteiligen sich an nationalen und internationalen Netzwerken zum Thema Finanzierungsmodelle für wissenschaftliche Infrastrukturen.
- Durch Ihr souveränes und professionelles Auftreten vertreten Sie die Abteilungsleitung gegenüber der zentralen Verwaltung und dem Wissenschaftlichen Rat des DKFZ.

Ihr Profil:

- Sie haben ein abgeschlossenes wissenschaftliches Hochschulstudium, vorzugsweise gefolgt von einer Promotion, in einem naturwissenschaftlichen Fach, oder verfügen über vergleichbare praktische Erfahrung.
- Sie zeichnen sich durch Ihre Leidenschaft für die Koordination und Planung von Projekten aus und verfügen über exzellente organisatorische Fähigkeiten.
- Idealerweise haben Sie bereits Berufserfahrung an akademischen Forschungseinrichtungen, insbesondere im Bereich von Forschungsinfrastrukturen.
- Kenntnisse in der Kosten- und Leistungsrechnung sind von Vorteil.
