The research unit Paleo-Oceanography of research division 1 “Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics” is offering the following position in the frame of the ERC Synergy-Grant "T-SECTOR", starting on June 1st 2025. The position offers the possibility to attain a doctoral degree in natural sciences.
Project Description

For the understanding of the Earth system a quantification of climate-solid Earth feedbacks is required. The global glacial/interglacial climatic changes of the past 1,5 million years led to the periodic waxing and waning of continental ice sheets and caused a vast mass transfer between the continents (ice load) and the oceans resulting in sea level changes of up to 140 m. Mid ocean ridges (MOR) where 80% of Earth’s volcanism occurs, are sensitive to such pressure changes, but their response to glacial cycles is largely unknown. Models of MOR response to sea level fluctuations predict changes in hydrothermal activity but comprehensive time series have so far not been accessible.
Carbonate-rich sediments of the MORs provide an archive of hydrothermal activity (radiogenic and stable isotope compositions of the authigenic seawater-derived sediment phases (in particular of Pb) and trace metal contents) that can be sampled by gravity coring. Through closely spaced new cores from MOR sections across the East Pacific Rise to be taken during an upcoming expedition, high-resolution time series of changes in hydrothermal activity of the past 1,5 million years can be achieved and directly linked to the climate record.

Job Description / Duties

The successful candidate will be part of the international team of researchers of the ERC Synergy Grant „T-SECTOR“. She:He will participate in the recovery of sediment cores and their sampling during the planned seagoing expeditions, carry out the element and isotope geochemical measurements in the laboratories of GEOMAR, and interpret them in terms of past changes in hydrothermal activity. For the interpretation of the data she:he will closely collaborate with the partners of the project, in particular the stratigraphers. In addition, she:he will be involved in the preparations for the expeditions. Further tasks include the scientific interpretation of the data, their presentation at national and international conferences as well as their publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The successful candidate will regularly communicate with the other team members and will contribute to the management of the project and the curation of the data. required:

a Master of Science degree in Geosciences, Environmental Sciences, Oceanography or a related field
Knowledge in paleoceanography, sedimentology, marine geochemistry or a related field
willingness and capability to participate in sea-going expeditions

Die Stelle bietet die Möglichkeit zur Erlangung eines Doktorgrades in den Naturwissenschaften. Projektbeschreibung
Zum Verständnis des Erdsystems ist eine Quantifizierung der Rückkopplungen zwischen Klima und fester Erde erforderlich. Die globalen glazial/interglazialen Klimaveränderungen der letzten 1,5 Millionen Jahre führten zur periodischen Bildung kontinentaler Eisschilde und verursachten damit einem Massentransfer zwischen Kontinenten (Eisauflast) und den Ozeanen, der in globalen Meeresspiegelschwankungen von bis zu 140 Metern resultierte. Mittelozeanische Rückensysteme (MORs), an denen 80% des Vulkanismus der Erde stattfinden, werden von derartigen Druckveränderungen beeinflusst, aber ihre genaue Reaktion auf glaziale Zyklen ist weitgehend unbekannt. Modelle zeigen klimatisch gesteuerte Änderungen der hydrothermalen Aktivität, aber diese sind bislang nicht durch umfassende Zeitreihen belegt bzw. quantifiziert.
Die karbonatreichen Sedimente der mittelozeanischen Rückensysteme stellen ein Archiv der hydrothermalen Aktivität dar (radiogene und stabile Isotopenzusammensetzung der authigenen, aus dem Meerwasser stammenden Sedimentphasen, insbesondere Pb-Isotopie und Metallgehalte). Mittels systematischer und engräumiger Entnahme und Beprobung von neuen Schwerelotkernen dieser Sedimente während einer anstehenden Expedition sollen hochauflösende Zeitreihen der Schwankungen der hydrothermalen Aktivität an Spreizungsrückensegmenten des ostpazifischen Rückens über die letzten 1,5 Mio. Jahre erstellt und mit den Klimaaufzeichnungen verglichen werden.

Our section is working on understanding the dynamical evolution of the hazardous space radiation environment and developing tools for specification and prediction of the adverse effects of the space environment utilizing physics-based numerical models and data assimilation. In our research, we try to bridge our theoretical studies with high-performance tools that can be used in science, predictions, and applications.

Your responsibilities:

The successful candidate should have extensive experience in scientific programming. Job responsibilities will include a variety of tasks related to scientific programming, including but not limited to:

- Develop scientific codes
- Maintain data and code repositories
- Develop visualisations
- Develop various programming tools for scientific codes and data analysis
- Document and test existing codes
- Adopt scientific codes for different scientific problems
- Conduct scientific research in the field of space physics
- Write manuscripts that will be published in peer-reviewed journals

Your qualifications:

- Master's degree in physics, computer sciences, mathematics, or related natural sciences
- Work experience with IT programming or scientific programming and Unix operating systems
- Advanced knowledge of Matlab and/or Python and C++
- Experience in developing numerical codes
- Knowledge of code architecture and design patterns
- Knowledge of space physics is preferred, but candidates with exceptional computing skills and no background in space physics will also be considered

Wir sind ein „klassisches“ Geobüro mit Schwerpunkten in der Baugrund- und Altlastenerkundung in Leonberg bei Stuttgart. Aktuell suchen wir nach Verstärkung unseres Teams zur Bearbeitung von interessanten Projekten im Bereich Baugrunderkundung und -beratung.

Es erwartet dich eine abwechslungsreiche und fordernde Tätigkeit in einem jungen Team mit flacher Hierarchie, in die du mit der Zeit hineinwächst.

Die Tätigkeit im Baugrund umfasst zunächst die Planung und Begleitung der Geländearbeiten zur technischen Erkundung (Sondierungen, Bohrungen, etc.) und die Mitarbeit bei der Erstellung geotechnischer Berichte. Mittelfristiges Ziel ist die eigenständige Bearbeitung von Projekten und die Beratung unserer Kunden in geotechnischen Belangen sowie die Kommunikation mit anderen Fachingenieuren und Behörden.

Weite Anfahrten und Übernachtungen außerhalb werden bei uns nicht notwendig, da unsere Projekte überwiegend im Großraum Stuttgart liegen.

Postdoctoral researcher (f_m_x) “Digital Twin for Critical Zones under Climate Change”

The Critical Zone (CZ) is the thin layer between the upper surface of unweathered rock (i.e., bedrock) and the vegetation's upper boundary, where snow, rock, soil, water, air, and organisms interact. This vital ecosystem functions as Earth's "skin", supporting the diverse biological communities that contribute to the health and sustainability of our planet. This position is part of the new innovation pool project (DT4CZ: Digital Twins for Critical Zone under Climate Changes) funded by the Helmholtz Association. We seek a candidate to build digital twins of the critical zone within catchment scales and assess how anthropogenic climate change impacts the critical zone, especially in cold and alpine regions. We will focus on two sites: Svalbard, Norway, and Illgraben, Switzerland.

The position will be supervised by Dr. Hui Tang from the Earth Surface Process Modelling section at the GFZ (https://www.gfz-potsdam.de) . - Develop and use coupled numerical models to interpret in-situ and remote sensing data from cold and alpine regions
- Use the model to study how climate extremes affect the hydrological and geomorphological response of critical zones
- Further develop the models as needed to test and validate these concepts and scenarios
- Collaborate with other members of the DT4CZ project from AWI, UFZ and JSC (The Jülich Supercomputing Centre at Forschungszentrum Jülich (https://www.fz-juelich.de/en/ias/jsc/about-us) )
- Interact with other members of the Earth Surface Process Modelling Section at weekly group meetings and in other informal ways

Your qualifications:

- Master`s degree (or equivalent) and a PhD in Earth Sciences, Physics or Mathematics, with evidence of excellence in guided research
- Demonstrated knowledge (and preferably research experience) in geophysics, hydrology, or quantitative geomorphology or geography

- Lead molecular microbial profiling and methane oxidation process rate surveys in Wetscapes2.0 Screening Sites through targeted high throughput sequencing, bioinformatics and statistics (based on in-house bioinformatics and technical support)
- Conduct a seasonal survey of active methane oxidizing taxa and their process kinetics using transcriptomics and enzymatic assays
- Establish and characterize anaerobic methane oxidizing enrichments using batch incubations and a high-end in-house chemostat
- Seek potential proxies for soil methane uptake and its resilience in rewetted temperate fens
- Lead the development of a conceptual and/or statistical model of biogeochemical feedback on soil methane uptake in rewetted temperate fens
- Publish research results in international peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences and project meetings

The successful candidate will direct and represent the field of physical geodesy at GFZ with a particular focus on the earth’s gravity field and head section 1.2 with its observational facilities. The area of responsibilities will include observation, analysis, modelling, and interpretation of the static and time-variable earth’s gravity field from local to global scales. The future head is expected to advance the section's scientific profile in the Helmholtz research programme as well as within the international geodetic community. Your qualifications:

We expect applications from candidates with outstanding achievements and commitment to research in physical geodesy (PhD required). The near-Earth space environment is hazardous and poses a significant risk for satellites and humans in space. Currently, there are hundreds of operational commercial satellites with a revenue stream of tens of billions of dollars per year. There are also a number of other satellites that assist in navigation, weather prediction, and telecommunication. Frequent satellite failures caused by space weather have fueled a surge in interest with the specification and prediction of space weather during the last decade.

Our section "Space Physics and Space Weather" is working on understanding of the dynamical evolution of the hazardous space radiation environment and developing the tools for specification and prediction of the adverse effects of the space environment using models and data assimilation. We study fundamental processes in the near-Earth environment and focus on understanding fundamental processes responsible for the evolution of space radiation. Our research will help safely design and operate satellites and maintain ground networks. In our research, we try to bridge our theoretical studies with high performance computing to develop tools that can be used by engineers.

Die Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE) sucht einen Standort für ein Endlager für hochradioaktive Abfälle und baut das Endlager Konrad für schwach- und mittelradioaktive Abfälle. Die BGE hält das Endlager Morsleben offen bis zur Stilllegung und plant die Rückholung der radioaktiven Abfälle aus der Schachtanlage Asse. Die BGE ist eine bundeseigene Gesellschaft im Geschäftsbereich des Bundesumweltministeriums.

- Sie prüfen und bereiten geologische Fachdaten auf und werten diese aus
- Sie arbeiten an der 3D-Modellierung komplexer Intrasalinarstrukturen mittels GOCAD mit und Sie unterstützen bei der Erstellung geologischer Schnittrisse sowie geomechanischer Berechnungsschnitte mittels GOCAD und AutoCAD sowie weiterer Fachsoftware
- Ebenso erstellen und kontrollieren Sie Ergebnis- und Dokumentationsberichten
- Sie bearbeiten Rückfragen der Genehmigungsbehörde
- Sie setzen Qualitätssicherungsaufgaben gemäß QS-System um und führen Sonderaufgaben durch
- Sie verfügen über ein Hochschulstudium der Geologie oder vergleichbarem geowissenschaftlichem Abschluss (Diplom oder Master)
- Sie haben bereits Erfahrung in der Erfassung, Aufbereitung und Auswertung geologischer Erkundungsdaten (Über- und Untertage) gesammelt
- Außerdem haben Sie vertiefte Kenntnisse im datenbankbasierten Umgang mit Geodaten, Kenntnisse der Geologie Norddeutschlands, speziell bezüglich des Zechsteinsalinars sowie Kenntnisse der geologischen 3D-Modellierung mittels SKUA/GOCAD
- Kenntnisse in der Zeichnungsbearbeitung mittels AutoCAD sind vorteilhaft

Was Dich erwartet?

- Planung, Begleitung und Dokumentation von Probenahmen im Bereich der Altlastenerkundung
- Eigenverantwortliche Erstellung von Gutachten in allen Bearbeitungsphasen
- Planung, Ausschreibung sowie Übernahme der Bauleitung bei Altlastensanierungen
- Mitwirkung bei Gutachten im Rahmen von Rohstoffgewinnungen
- Durchführung von Haufwerksbeprobungen

Was Du mitbringen solltest?

- Studium im Bereich Geowissenschaften / Ingenieurwissenschaft bzw. vgl. Qualifikation
